The XS machine
Here you see the XS machine, Pr
Wright's greatest achievement to date.
Its shape may look strange, but it is highly ergonomic and patients can spend
hours in it without feeling uncomfortable. When the patient is installed, the
larger part lowers down to totally enclose her. This way, the X-waves are evenly
distributed throughout the body of the subject. The various hoses you notice
are needed to relay the power cables to the most essential areas with a minimal
loss of energy.
You can notice a big, roughly squared, articulated part at the top of the opened
machine. This part is positioned over the head of the patient during a session.
It houses various connections for virtual reality displays, which are used to
further enhance the psychological effect of X-stimulation.
All in all, this machine is much more ergonomic than the original
device invented by the infamous "Le Concierge".
There is always a member of the medical staff who attends the sessions in case
something strange would happen. Most of the time it is one of the nursybs,
but in some cases Natacha
stays with her charge. In exceptional cases, Prof
Wright himself directs the session.
The XS machine has two variants for the time being.
The first one is highly experimental and has yet to be fully tested.
It is called the Multi-XS. It consists of several XS machines grouped and synchronised.
This configuration allows for group therapy.
The intended purpose of the Multi-XS is for restoring good relationships between
several people. Just as the XS machine can restore harmony in one own's psyche,
multi XS should be capable of restoring harmony within a group. This is a much
needed treatment since superheroines very often belong to groups. At times,
personal relationships within these groups may become strained, which can be
a menace to the team's continued existence, even if no one in the group is suffering
from a mental illness. The multi XS, in such cases, should be able to resynchronise
the X-biorythms of the team members thus making them overcome their problems.
Multi-XS is also, in theory, capable of diagnosing the Doppleganger Syndrome
(this disease has been described by the scientists of the Chainsman Institute)
or differentiating between someone and her clone. It is inevitable these days,
given the progress of genetics, that the occurrence of an heroine confronted
to her clone will get ever more frequent. Testing who is who will become increasingly
difficult. With the multi-XS, you could tell the difference by using what Prof
Simon calls the X² test (Chi-square test). It involves fine diagnostics
of one's aura through prolonged X-stimulation. You would need the subject and
her clone to be installed on the machine, and also a person who is very close
to the original subject. The distorsions between cases and reference would allow
for a diagnostic to be made.
All these indications are still conjectural and the Multi-XS machine is still
experimental.
By contrast the second variant is used routinely in La Conciergerie.
It is a scaled down version of the XS machine that is called Light XS. Light
XS looks like an armoured bikini and is actually worn by the patient. It produces
X-stimuli and X-waves exactly like the XS machine, which stimulates the basic
chakra points. It may not have enough power to deliver the incredible amount
of stimulation offered by its bigger counterpart, but it is more than capable
of provoking strong reactions as well as powerful and frequent releases in any
female patient. It has an operational capability of 2 weeks at full power use.
It cannot be used to conduct a full treatment because it lacks all the sophisticated
recording and analysis capacities of the XS machine, but it has it is quite
sophisticated nonetheless, due to its several dials (one on the lower part,
two n the upper part) which are used to regulate precisely the amount of stimulation
delivered to each chakra point.
It is used as a secondary therapy when Prof
Wright thinks that a particular patient needs prolonged low level X-stimulation
rather than the higher levels. Since it can be worn, her X-biorythms can be
stimulated night and day for long periods of time.
The second use of Light XS is for transport. Patients having to wait a long
time in the corridors before or after their sessions receive a continuous basal
stimulation so that they are better prepared for their treatment.
There is also an unofficial use for Light XS. Since wearing it is unanimously
recorded as a pleasant experience, it is sometimes used by U
89, our Discipline Manager, to reward some of her students.
Judith, our security
officer, has sometimes used it in this way.
Prof Wright has turned
a blind eye on this, but he has reminded them that XS technology could be easily
used to torture people depending on who it was applied to and what levels were
delivered. He has made it clear that none of this would be tolerated in his
Clinique.
It seems his warning has been heard since no one has ever complained about XS
technology misuse.
