X-Latex

X latex is a substance invented by Prof. Simon Wright (and patented by him too).
He will probably give you a more detailed theoretical explanation about it, but, basically, it is a malleable substance, usually black or red, sometimes white or blue, which can take any shape it is programmed to form.

It can also detect any being with a psyche and has many other wonderful abilities.
For example:

It can filter various radiations. The type of radient energy and the level of filtration are totally adjustable. This allows for girls to sunbathe and get a full body tan without ever taking out the outfit.
It can also adjust its internal heat to keep the wearer always comfortable. This allows for skiing without having to wear several layers of cumbersome clothes.
Animated X-latex can also remove the clothing of people it engulfs. It does this by rearranging their molecules, disassembling them and reassembling them somewhere else, usually within the container where the animated X-latex was before.
It also takes care of bodily needs, shaving bodily hair, recycling the wastes and sweat into a nutritive fluid fed directly in the mouth of the patient. This fluid can even be programmed to induce a suspended animation state in the subject.
All of these characteristics come from the original intended use of X-latex. Prof Simon had designed it as an emergency suit in case of sudden vacuum exposure due to a disaster aboard a spacecraft. X-latex survival suits would have allowed the crew to remain alive for months in deep space, waiting for rescue. X-latex has shown so many extraordinary properties that it has become our base product in La Clinique.

There is also one property of X-latex that wasn't part of the original design specifications. Actually, it was this unexpected consequence of X-latex's composition which, despite its many advantages, caused the Galactic Peace Force to refuse to make this design of deep space rescue suits standard equipment on their spaceships . This property is called Psyshield.
Prof. Simon Wright would explain this much better than I ever can, but basically, it means that psychic energy cannot pass through it from outside and is reflected away just like harmful radiation. Psychic energy also cannot be emitted by those surrounded by it since the X-latex just absorbs it, diffuses it evenly on its surface, then radiates this energy harmlessly into the surrounding atmosphere or vaccuum of space. This was seen as a major drawback by the Galactic Peace Force since it meant that psychic probes could not be used to locate the crews of wrecked spaceships cast adrift in the cold of outerspace. This refusal to fund development forced Prof Wright to cease his researches on X-latex at that time, but he resumed them later when he started devising what was to become La Clinique.
Given the fact that La Clinique would mainly treat (and therefore restrain) female metahumans (or superheroines if you prefer), the Psyshield ability of X-latex would be an invaluable advantage, depriving them of all their dangerous powers. By being brought down to being "mere mortals" it could help them regain a sense of reality they had lost.
So this was how X-latex, like so many inventions, was finally used for something completely unforeseen at the time of his creation.
To be precise on the matter of Psyshield ability, I must say that X-latex doesn't block all the known super powers. It only blocks those that come from a psychic (or magical) energy. The purely physical ones, like the strength given by sheer muscle augmentation, shapeshifting powers that work on a cellular level or the flexibility of contorsionists, is not blocked by Psyshield. But since these powers are effectively countered by X-latex's strength and malleability, we assume, for practical use, that someone wearing X-latex, even on a very small part of her body, sees her super powers nullified. For this reason upon arrival at La Clinique heroines are dressed in X-Latex outfits, often designed to look like their everyday wear (or costumes). Familar attire helps cushion the shock of their loss of powers, unaware that these X-Latex costumes are the source of their loss.

For practical purposes, we make a distinction between animated and non animated X-latex.

Non animated X-latex looks just like ordinary latex. When not in its programmed shape, it is like a stiff liquid rubber. It has strange properties though.
First, you don't sew it or cut it. You just program a form and it reshapes itself to match the pattern, whatever the form, however big or small. It always adhere comfortably to the skin. This allows for very tight fitting shiny outfits, with forms sometimes completely unachievable by classic designs. These outfits have become rapidly popular among the staff.
X-latex is also very comfortable to wear. It has many microscopic inner "fingers" which constantly rub the skin of the wearer and massage its X-points to unstress her. Since X-latex is also psycho-conductive, it can sense when she needs these massages even before the wearer is aware of this need.
The psycho-conduction of X-latex includes only a narrow bandwidth of emotions though, but these are primary ones. More importantly, it is a very good conductor of X-energy. This explains why it has been chosen to be the material from which X-gloves are made. Someone with an X-glove touching a patient wearing X-latex can see it effects increased ten times by the psycho conduction and the frenetic consecutive inner massage.
Furthermore, nano secretions which give internal auto lubrication makes these outfits very comfortable and pleasant to wear.
All these properties explain why everyone here is wearing X-latex.

Animated X-latex is another matter entirely. Not that it is a different substance, it has the same passive properties of radiation absorption and psychic shield as its non animated counterpart. Animated X-latex is the only one to have the capacities of clothes removal, care of bodily needs, but the main difference with its non animated counterpart is that it seems to have a will of its own.
Where non animated latex can be programmed to take on a definite shape, animated X-latex is programmed to have behaviours. Both can be reprogrammed, but animated X-latex won't just take the form requested unless it is the most appropriate thing to do to fulfil its behavioural program.
X latex is psycho sensitive and can sense anything having a psyche around him, even if invisible, even if in spiritual or incorporeal form. If it can think or feel, X-latex can see it.
Animated X-latex has two main programs that are used routinely. The first is "search, overpower and restraint" which makes maximum use of its capabilities for life-form scanning and adapting itself to them as well as its strength. The second primary program is used in therapy and is more like "emulate and stimulate". This greatly enhances the efficiency of the XS machinery.
Animated X-latex cannot be simply stored in cans or bottles like the non animated form. Once programmed it starts fulfilling its action pattern whatever the circumstances. If let loose, it would target any living being nearby, engulf her and restrain her, whoever she might be.
To prevent this, X-latex is stored in those black spheres you saw the guard-chans armed with. They are completely shock proof (to prevent unintentional activation) but they are about the same size and weight as a bowling bowl, which is not always very convenient to use for a normal human.

When using animated X-latex, you just activate the device and program a target. A black, white, blue or red form emerges from its X-ball, much like a djinn out of his bottle or a pocket monster out of his ball and it starts chasing its target, finally engulfing her and taking a final form which is the most efficent for restraining the subject.

Animated X-latex has many other characteristics, and Professor Simon Wright will undoubtedly tell you much more about X-latex's nature than I ever can.
