La Clinique uses a lot of android robots, or to be more exact,
gynoids since they have feminine shapes. The main reason behind this is that
they are expendable. No one can try to take them hostages or injure them as
part of an escape plan.
Another advantage is that they are immune to the rays of the X-gun. This allows
for its use even when patients are trying to escape by moving within a group
of robots.
The most advanced among the robots are members of the management staff. To be
completely honest, I am one of them, although my personal case is a bit more
complicated. But Lady, who acts as deputy of Pr Simon Wright, is also a gynoid.
Most of the robots that are used here, however, are less sophisticated.,
but they nonetheless are the main workforce of La Clinique. They never tire
and are always focused on their tasks. They are capable of self programming,
are able to undertake any technical task they are devised for and can even react
to most unusual situations. Sophisticated as their AI's are they do lack when
it comes to insight and imagination, however. That is why they are under the
command of human beings.
They are quite expensive to make, but maintenance costs are cut due to Prof
Simon Wright and Lady's technical expertise. Besides, La Clinique doesn't have
money problem for the moment.
At the time being, we are using several types of robots though two types predominate: the guard robots, nicknamed "guard-chan", and the Nurse robots, nicknamed "Nursyb".
The standard version "guard-chan" is strong and agile,
with an advanced self contained Artificial Intelligence. They are used for welcoming
visitors, checking identities, and dealing with all the standard tasks of security,
up to and including overpowering unruly patients or reclaiming would be escapees.
They do have a tendency to take up spectacular or provocative poses at some
otherwise serious moments, but Prof Simon Wright says it is not a problem, even
if Judith, our chief security officer,
thinks that their anime-like appearance detracts from their menacing aspect.
They are armed with all the standard weapons used here, especially the very
effective X-Ball. Their strength gives them
the ability to handle these bowling bowl like grenades with an ease and dexterity
that no normal human can hope to match.
The heavy version of the guard-chan has a reinforced chassis,
stronger myomer bundles and is better protected. Since their size is the same
as the standard model this increase in strength and durability has been made
at the expense of agility and wits : they tend to hit very hard and to think
a bit slower. This hardware problem has been overcome by software upgrades and
deployment patterns : they are programmed to hit first and think later. They
are posted at strategic points in La Clinique, and a reserve is available on
the call of security officers.
They are armed with a shield and a multi-purpose shotgun,
and they carry an X-ball each.
The Nursybs are much more human looking. Their appearance has
been specially designed to avoid disturbing patients too much. Their AI is very
complex, letting them perceive their charges' feelings though their empathy
circuitry, allowing them to make medical decisions on their own. A complete
medical database has been imbedded in their cyberbrain, including theory and
technics of the X-biorythm therapy. They are not as strong as the security robots,
but are more than capable of taking care of early stages of rebellion among
their patients.
They are not armed, but among their inbuilt medical equipment are a range of
hypodermic needles concealed in their arms, most of them holding some form of
calming or sleep inducing drug.
