The Delta Latex Files
By: Tasha C. Polecat
General Overview:
Delta latex is a nanite based clothing, using the rubber variant of latex as
a coating for the form. Because of the nature of this design, it allows for a
lot of mobility in how one is clothed, as the nanites can be used to form ANY
variant or style of clothing, even colors, the primary restriction that it
will always look and feel like well polished latex. Unlike normal latex,
because of the design, it has an innate slickness to it against the skin,
giving the Delta Latex an oft sought after texture that many find pleasurable.
The Nanites:
This is the most basic element of the Delta Latex, and what makes it so unique
as well. The nanites are comprised of a round shell with elements similar to
both latex and plastic coating it. They are designed with 10 radial legs,
each tipped with a 3 pronged "hand" to allow them to move over an individual
as instructed. They communicate with each other almost instantaneously, using
a small localized short-wave communication band. If this signal is jammed,
the nanites will continue as they were pre-programmed, but that will be
handled in more detail later in this document.
Nanites are programmed and have 4 of the 5 senses we as humans enjoy. They
have a sense of touch, or as close to it as technology can provide, which is
done mostly through texture mapping and resistance testing. It has a sense
of "smell" and "taste" through sensors placed at the tip of each foot,
allowing the nanite to use that data. They also use vibrations as a sense of
hearing, thus allowing for no external sensors to ruin the smooth shape of
the nanites, and in the end the texture of the material.
The nanites are designed with two biological portions inside their
hardwiring. Their ROM, which holds their hardwired memory; their RAM, stored
in the same place as the ROM, and carrying all their current instructions
and programming; and their power supply, which acts as a sort of natural
battery. Nanites have a relatively short life-span (if you can call it such)
and thus use it's network of short-wave communications almost to act as a
sort of "hive mind". This allows the computing power of the Delta Latex to
be magnified exponentially. Alone a nanite might be able to figure out which
way is up. Together they could possible be used to argue the theory of
relativity. in theory anyway. Nanites are better suited for physical tasks,
thus acting as clothing is a perfect function for them. or as a restraint.
Since the nanites can form in any way, restraints are as easily formed as a
change of clothing.
Operation:
The preceding overview of the nanites is accurate, but really it does not
begin to allow one to understand the complexities of design and the research
work that went into this invention. The key to the nanites' behaviour is
in their programming. This is where it all comes together. The nanites are
equipped with 4 stages they will progress through: Standby, Active,
Transitional, and Dormant
Standby - This mode is used for one reason. The nanites are conserving
their power, not activated yet and awaiting application. They can be brought
to active mode from this mode, and will not revert to Standby mode unless
instructed from an outside source.
Active - This mode is when the nanites are applied, and where most of their
programming comes into play. The active mode can be brought about via remote
instructions, or a "shock". In short when the nanites are removed from the
container they were being held in they become active. The minutia are
difficult to label out, as there is a list of criteria as long as my arm,
but suffice it to say that the nanites, once those criteria have been met,
will activate. In this mode, the nanites will then begin to use their
"unfed" lifespan to search for subjects to link to. If dispersed on the
ground with no suitable subjects, this lasts about 15 minutes. If the
nanites find a living subject that meets the criteria, OR THEIR CLOTHING, it
will begin to move to coat.
It won't eat until it makes contact with the skin itself, but unless the
outfit is %100 waterproof, then the nanites can reach it. Once contacting
skin and indeed confirming the subject is human (Done via a simple look at the
molecules of the skin, since a nanite is only about the size of 3 average
molecules) it begins to covering the subject. Usually this is only up to the
neck level, but for the purposes of the institute, this has been modified.
The nanites will, as soon as the subject has been verified, also begin to
"eat" any clothing or covering over the individual, turning it into fuel
itself. This includes things like bacteria, viruses. Dead skin, and oft times
body hair (That will be covered in more detail later). Once it's done this,
it will begin forming the clothing it has been pre-programmed to assume, in
the case of the Institute's default setting this is a cocoon sort of enclosure
that forces legs bent fully at the knees and restrains legs tightly together,
and arms pulled and restrained behind the patient.
Transitional - This mode is exactly what it says. Once the proper structure
in the active mode is formed, the nanites enter a transitional mode.
Literally scavenging it's own brethren, they use the other materials as well
to form a tight weave to form the "skin" of the latex. There will be nanites
left mobile after this, but their purpose will be explained in a moment. It
should be noted that broken down nanites are NOT totally shut down. If
anything they go into a modified standby mode, waiting commands to
reactivate (And thus be rebuilt and rebuild their brethren). They also will
continually watch for signs of overstressing and tears..
Dormant - The final mode, and the most common to see Delta Latex in. In
this state, the latex is now a full outfit around the wearer, as specified,
and the nanites have completed the transitional phase. At this point there
is little to note, other then the free roaming nanites over the surface. The
nanites over the surface of both the internal and external side provide a
variety of purposes. Most obvious would be in case of undo stress or
tearing. With stress, they will simply rebuild the area of latex to
compensate for the increased stress. In tearing, be it a cut or a rip, the
nanites will move immediately to relink and reseal the outfit back closed.
The time varies, but usually 30 seconds is the longest it takes for such a
repair to be made. Also the nanites serve another purpose, and that is of
cleanliness. This will be described below, however it should be noted that
an individual wearing a delta Latex suit has little to worry about being
"dirty".
Features:
Delta latex has a series of features that allows it to be considered an
upgrade to Beta latex (And seeing as how much of the design was done under the
watchful eye, and with the assistance of, Dr. Sebastian, that holds even more
true).
Malleability - This is Delta Latex' primary feature. Once placed on a
wearer, it becomes nearly totally malleable with the proper tools. Unlike
its predecessor, which had to be cut using a special tool, all it takes is a
properly wired computer and some fashion sense. Nearly any outfit or
restraint can be formed over the person wearing the Delta Latex, without
ever removing or re-applying the nanites. They will simply go into an active
mode, reform, then go dormant once more.
Cleanliness - Another prime feature of the Delta Latex. Because of the
nanites left in the surface of the dormant Delta Latex, it stands to reason
they should do something. As it so happens, they do. Their primary concern
becomes gathering materials to replace themselves and continue in that
cycle. Thus dirt, dust, anything that can "stain" the surface of the Delta
Latex (Even water!!) is broken down and used, thus "cleaning" the suit. This
also works form the inside as well, where actually MORE Nanites are
required. Dead skin, dirt, germs, even sweat and other bodily fluids all can
be converted to tools. Most notable in this is the hardest for a patient or
wearer to get used to, the suit will break down fecal matter and urine as
well. This means the "waste disposal" tubes you use a lot in the institute
could be replaced with a simple pair of underwear made from Delta Latex. A
small adjustable portion of this concerns body hair. The nanites default to
removing the body hair all over the body. Through careful effort it
preserves the hair on top of the head as well, but this is a feature that
can be shut off from most of the larger remote terminals. Same holds true
for the reverse, which is activating a full ban on the nanites using body
hair. This does present the problem that the nanites would not be able to
"eat" as effectively, and would slow down the active phase significantly.
Texture - The original design of Delta Latex was for a soft and pleasurable
texture. While not having succeeded to the level I had hoped, it did succeed
admirably, and in some cases has been quite sought after because of it.
Porous - Because of how the weave is constructed, no tubes or such are
required for an individual who has had latex coated over their face. This
also prevents the problem most "real" latex can cause with heavy sweating
and such, by allowing the skin to "breathe".
Waste Disposal - Described in detail before, the nanites break down fecal
matter and urine, thus negating the need for special outfitting for waste
disposal.
History:
Delta latex was not created overnight. As such a brief overview of the
history of this creation as it progressed. It started out as a project to
mimic the capabilities of a symbiotic driving organism that acted much like
latex. With this in mind DNA engineering was created to simulate the effects,
which from this point forward will be called "Bio-Latex". Satisfied upon its
completion, the designer (Myself) tested it.
This turned out to be a critical error, and were it not for my own DNA
patterns being stored on file, I likely would have been turned completely into
a being of some sort of rubber. The bio-latex had a very invasive protocol,
and was not happy just forming an outfit, it completely started replacing the
layers beneath, intent on turning the wearer into a literal latex being. How I
was kept alive during this process is not something I yet understand, but
after a narrow escape, I needed some help.
From there I turned to my friend, Dr. Sebastian. We had entered a business
arrangement some months before, but when he was shown the design I had on
hand, he agreed to assist. The Bio-latex is still in storage within his
home, carefully secured and awaiting further research. His mystical
abilities assisted in this manner, as it was able to accomplish things I was
not with my technology. From there, I chose a more mechanical methodology
for the now dubbed "Delta Latex" (Dubbed by Dr. Sebastian himself, who saw this
sort as an epiphany I wager, as he seemed to take delight in the idea of a
"next step" for his Beta Latex, but I digress). Dr. Sebastian and I began
working over the next several months step by step. I would create the
nanites, and test them on myself under his observance, and if problems
arose, he used his magic to temper the nanites, and then render them
harmless enough for me to analyze the problems.
It was during this cycle the final design was literally stumbled over. After
finishing another testing Dr. Sebastian revealed he had not had to curtail
anything with the last batch, and we knew we had a winner. The rest was
simply a matter of finesse and touching up the program to make it more
viable for wide-spread use, along with some fail-safes to ensure they could
not malfunction to the extreme that someone might be hurt.
Known Problems:
Communication Disruption - The nanites will continue to act upon their
program. They will see this as actually making the subject in question more
important to restrain. Unfortunately this leads to a slight level of
clumsiness, as the nanites have to now "guess' where their brethren are, but
in the end the pace is about the same, as is the effect.
EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) - Because the nanites memory and power is on a
biological styled area, this will not destroy the nanites, only cause them
to stop (as though they were in standby mode) for the duration of the pulse.
Once it has passed, the nanites will re-initialize and continue their work )
As well as cannibalizing those that were more fragile and had something
physically destroyed from the pulse
Electricity - While in any mode other then Standby, this is the only method
to "kill" the nanites. It will literally fry their internal circuitry and
cause them to crumble into what would appear at a glance to be an incredibly
fine sand or dust. Once the nanites reach dormant mode, the electrical
blasts will kill off the active nanites. While in this mode the Delta Latex
is grounded, much like real latex would, the blast would destroy the active
nanites, and the normal functions of such an outfit would quickly come to an
end. A small amount of "fresh" Delta Latex can be added to restore these
properties, but however this is Delta Latex' primary weakness.
Compatible Programming - An odd and recent problem. Someone with a computer
attuned to the proper frequencies could conceivable give commands to the
nanites. While the transmissions have been encrypted with the best I can
manage, it is possible such a thing could be hacked. Security personnel will
be notified of this problem so an emergency cut-off can be used if needed.
Other Nanites - Not truly a problem, but the Delta Latex will not interact
with, and even refuse to cover something, that has nanites of their own. The
reasons for this is simple, a war of the nanites could literally kill the
host. At that point it becomes a "First come first serve". Thus if the other
nanites were already there, the Delta Latex nanites would peacefully vacate.
Closing:
Delta latex is a flexible and easily programmed method of replacement to the
Beta Latex. BUT it is not a fix all, as with any new technology, there are
problems it itself cannot handle. However I am sure that the Delta latex will
be a useful part of the Chainsman Institute's resources, and perhaps may even
become as popular as Beta Latex with the staff as well.
