Hinako Nimomiya - Teacher/Trainer
Ms. Hinako (as she prefers to be known) was a teacher in Tokyo's Nerima Ward in a High School renowned for student rowdiness and a remarkably high level of martial arts expertise among the student body. While adept at quelling disturbances Ms. Hinako found herself becoming bored with her lot particularly after the disappearance of the strongest and most troublemaking students (for which we bear some measure of responsibility) meant her job had lost its challenging elements. Additionally she had an embarrassing medical condition that was interfering in developing a full social life. So she was intrigued by Ms. Trepe's offer of both a position and a cure and after passing her interview with flying colours packed her lucky 1-yen piece and was on the next plane to the Institute. True to Ms. Trepe's promise our infirmary was able (with the assistance of both Tasha and Sebastian) to stabilise her physical condition so she hasn't suffered any changes since joining the Institute. She has fit in well, receiving very favourable assessments from Ms. Trepe on her teaching skills and has proven that if the need arises she is very effective at subduing patients. Though due to lack of targets it has been primarily other staff members who have served as demonstrations of this making her QuAT's not secret any longer weapon when pranking.![]()
Layla Mackenzie - Teacher/Trainer
Layla Mackenzie was the second addition to our teaching staff. She was looking for a change rather than a challenge having been the one to fulfill a centuries family tradition. The problem, as she has stated on several occasions, is that nobody told her what to do for an encore. Her ancestors just passed on the duty to the next generation but having fulfilled that destiny she found herself at a loose end. Which was why she was willing to listen when Ms Trepe dropped by while she was on break between semesters. The radical difference of an Institute teaching position from anything she had done before was appealing so she decide to give it a try and sent a letter of resignation to her school. She was also glad of an excuse to move as she was getting tired of the locals mistaking her for Kaho Mizuki who is evidently almost, but not quite, her doppleganger. While initially having some modesty related issues Ms. MacKenzie quickly overcame them and become a valued member of the QuAT team. Not merely for her impressive teaching skills. In addition to them her even temper, soft voice, calm in the face of chaos and skill in mediating disputes have made her the staff's peacemaker so even if pranks get out of hand or personality clashes arise she is always able to soothe the ruffled feathers and restore QuAT's unity. A vital skill as it's an old but true axiom that united we stand, divided we fall. Speaking of united we stand when off-duty this trio is nigh inseparable.![]()
Ayumi Sensai, Anice Farm, Rarako Sensai - Teachers/Trainers
All three of these teachers originally learned their skills in the Japanese educational system but in very different locales. Ms. Ayumi Sensai came to use from Graviton High, a state of the art facility. Ms. Anice Farm learned her skills at the Cysonic Institute which while ostentatiously a primary school housed a highly advanced cybernetics and weapons research laboratory. Rarako Sensai (Ayumi's younger half sister who it's impossible to think of as a Ms.) came to us for the more modest environment of Danguriyama High, a standard middle class high school. At least it would have been had it not been for the presence of one Reijiro Techno in the student body. Because of this Rarako learned to deal with the consequences of what can be best described as weird science early in her career. I should digress at this point to mention that with the Sensai sisters having a family name that sounded like their profession (teachers being known as Sensei in Japan) students, parents and co-workers tended to misunderstand and believe that they had introduced themselves as "Ms. Rarako (and Ms. Ayumi) the teacher". So they were usually addressed in this fashion and having got tired of correcting the error early on (in Ayumi's case anyway, Rarako never minded being called Rarako Sensei instead of Sensai Sensei) grew used to being treated with less formality than usual by their students. A useful trait for their work here and one that Anice Farm learned naturally as she taught younger children who knew a lot less about the respect teachers of older children expected. This makes it easier for them to relate on a casual basis to the students their own age or older they have in the Institute which makes for a less awkward atmosphere. As a result all three have become popular, particularly Rarako and since they get on so well together are the first choice for multi-user equipment training sessions. All three had different reasons for joining our staff. In the case of Ayumi Sensai it can be characterised as environmental illness. Longsuffering as she was she grew tired of the constant destruction and rebuilding of both Graviton High and Graviton City itself thanks to the regular metahuman vs mecha battles combined with the frequent extraterrestrial invasions. She finally reached her breaking point and decided to resign after the disastrous fiasco on what was to have been her wedding day. Incidentally she's still single as the groom made it clear he was obsessed with another woman (actually an underage girl) so she broke the arranged marriage and left Graviton forever. Thanks to Graviton's status as an elite school she found she was considered overqualified for most teaching positions so renewed employment was harder to find than she had expected. She wasn't completely dismayed by this as she had been thinking about trying something different but had no clear idea what that might be. It was during this period that she was reunited with her younger sister Rarako. To be precise I should say half-sister as they had the same father but different mothers in case you were wondering about their very different appearances. At any rate they grew up together and don't make the distinction (frankly I'm not sure Rarako understands it) and just call each other sister. Rarako had also resigned from her position having found Danguriyama High School becoming unbearably dull after the graduation of Reijiro Techno. So with her customary impulsiveness she had followed her sister's example and given her two weeks notice. This behaviour didn't surprise Ayumi but she was startled when she found out that her sister actually had a plan this time. Rarako had seen an ad about the Institute's search for qualified teachers. Ms. Trepe had placed it in a variety of journals and Rarako had stumbled across it in a magazine left in the teachers' staffroom. It sounded like fun to her and since her sister was still at a loose end she invited Ayumi to come along for an interview of her own. After reading more of the fine print than Rarako had Ayumi was more than a little apprehensive about the nature of the job and accompanied Rarako mainly to see that she wasn't getting herself into more than she could handle. In fact the opposite turned out to be true. Thanks to a trip to the ladies room Ayumi missed the start of the practical part of the interview and on her return misinterpreted the sight of Rarako being restrained. She attempted to intervene and was subdued and secured by security leading Rarako to think Ayumi had arranged for her own interview. At any rate Rarako clearly demonstrated that while not the most academically gifted applicant she was the most enthusiastic and had developed a talent inspiring that same enthusiasm in her students. She is the most accomplished at motivating the staff to give their full attention to the training classes and banishing the somewhat cynical attitude that they've seen it all before. Which our longest serving employees sometimes seem to exude. She is also nearly impossible to embarrass which can be a very useful attitude in this position. Getting back to the day of the interview Rarako qualified and was offered a position. She had enjoyed herself and was looking forward to her new career so she accepted on the spot. There was still a little confusion about her sister to clear up but once that was done Ayumi was released and free to leave. However she said she was still concerned about her sister's well being and determined to keep an eye on her so she demanded an interview of her own. Personally I suspect she found her brief incarceration more enjoyable than she will admit and that was a leading factor in her decision. But that's just my theory. You can ask her if you like but I doubt she'll confirm it. She will confirm that part of her reason for staying was learning that her two most destructive former students had become patients. Considering all they put her through I think we can forgive her a little gloating. At any rate she demonstrated a more methodical approach to teaching and attempted escape than her sister which also has its place. The two of them make a very good team when teaching in tandem as their strengths compliment one another making for an excellent sister act. This brings us to the third member of the trio. Anice Farm is in no way related to the Sensai sisters but when they met something clicked and Anice became an unofficially adopted member of the sisterhood. It's surprising they get along so well considering that Anice has some major differences from them. Just one of those things you can't quite explain I guess. You wouldn't know it to look at her but Anice is a cyborg. Thanks to the excellent work of the late Memory Jeanne and the Borgman Project it's impossible to tell how which parts of her body are artificial and just how extensive her cybernetic replacements were. Restored after extensive injuries as part of a government backed covert weapons program Ms. Farm distinguished herself during field operations, earning a number of commendations. During this time she taught at the Cysonic Institute as a cover for her Borgman activities. However the truth was that teaching was always her first love and after the conclusion of the Borgman Project's mandate she was not unhappy to retire from a combat orientated lifestyle. Excuse me? No, the government didn't consider releasing a battle hardened cyborg like Ms. Farm a problem. Her cybernetic enhancements are far less dangerous than those of many we encounter in the line of duty. While she was extremely powerful while wearing her powerarmour without a Borgman suit to integrate with her strength is only slightly above that of a flesh and blood woman of her size and build. As to her Borgman equipment unlike Ms. Farm these were government property and are stored away somewhere just in case they're ever needed again. At any rate it was at this point that she made what she would later consider a serious error in judgement. Of course hindsight is always 20/20 and I'm sure it seemed like a very good idea at the time. During her time in the project she had become romantically involved with her co-worker, Ryo Hibiki. Mr. Hibiki had been an astronaut with NASA until his injuries and restoration by the project occurred. With the project concluded he regained his position and had to move to the space center. Naturally he asked Anice to come with him and she agreed and immediately resigned her teaching position. This was where the problems started since while she was qualified as a teacher and a Borgman neither skill was in demand at NASA. Lacking any viable alternatives she took a menial position in the base's cafeteria. The work was tedious and with Ryo pre-occupied with his astronaut training and taking her for granted their relationship inevitably deteriorated. In fact it reached the point that she was willing to walk away when a much better employment offer arrived. Unfortunately it turned out to be a trap by a megalomaniacal cybernetics researcher with a very ill-defined and nonsensical plan to replace humans with cyborgs. His own efforts being very limited he needed to study a prime specimen like Anice in order to improve his own designs. After being rescued by Ryo and their old comrade Chuck she returned with Ryo to NASA but despite all the excitement the underlying problem had not changed. They tried to patch their relationship up after the kidnapping but things were never the same and eventually they broke up. Anice drifted away without any idea what to do next. There weren't many places that needed a cyborg schoolteacher yet she had realised that teaching was what she really wanted to do. With traditional positions closed she began investigating more unconventional offers which to make a long story short is what brought her to us and why she's happy to be working here. Feel free to ask her yourself. You'll find she likes the company, particularly the Sensais, and feels she fits in around here just fine. Don't forget the departmental secretary is an android so being a cyborg's hardly exceptional. If you don't want to interview her then let's move on. There's still a lot of ground to cover. Moving on from the Teachers to the Testers I'll just note some of the differences between the two sections. The Testers primary function is to test both the viability and to look for flaws in the techniques, tools and restraints produced by the Research and Development Department. All the Testers possess skills useful in running the items they're given through a very strenuous workout. Unlike the Teachers who study utility, application and usefulness the Tester's job is to try and escape or at least break the item being tested. If it can't withstand their treatment then it would be folly to use it on actual patients. If the item passes muster it goes to the Teachers so its uses and effectiveness can be learned then taught to our Medical and Support Staff. Since full testing takes time this means in practical terms that (barring escape, breakage or malfunction) Testers can expect to spend longer periods wearing restraints than Teachers. The cutoff for Teachers is twelve hours, for Testers it's five days followed by a two day break period. I should note that five days is the maximum. Testers are regularly monitored by the Joys while on duty and if they are found to be suffering excessive strain or other medical difficulties testing will be halted early. In these cases we then review the procedings to determine if the problem was application or inherent in the design and what, if any, modifications should be made before it is returned to R&D for improvements. With that said it's time to meet the Testers and see where they work. Unless you'd like to have another word with QuAT's Adminstrators or drop by QuAT's Demonstration Arena. If you've had enough of this Department and want to move on there are alternatives available. Perhaps you'd like to meet the Support Staff members Quality Assurance and Training is responsible for tutouring in our latest innovations? Or the Medical Staff who will be perscribing these techniques and technologies? If you prefer we can arrange an interview with a member of our involuntary patient acquisition team. Perhaps you'd like to meet our Physical Trainers and see the Gym Or I could give you the scoop on our advances in humane capture technology Alternately some visitors have been fascinated by the specifics of our patient restraint and control equipment Others have wanted to hear all about our use of robotics Then there are those who were more interested in the human interest angle of our friendly staff rivalries If you insist we could take a look at our underground high security storage 7facility Of course you can always return to the Open Wards Finally there's one more option. The place most everyone wants to see.![]()
