It looks like this Lab is in use so let's take a peek inside.
Ah, that's interesting.

Actually I was referring to the patient's identity rather than her
circumstances.
Yes, I said patient. This isn't one of our Testers but rather the only
patient in the Institute who assists the QuAT team with their work. Her
name's Brande.
If you haven't already you'll hear all about her in Grimbor Ward but
here's a brief recap. Despite her earlier infamy Brande's become one of our
greatest rehabilitation success stories. She's now a Patient Trustee (the
only one outside the Open Ward) which means she is permitted to assist staff
members. In Brande's case being an expert escapologist she has volunteered
to assist the QuAT team with looking for flaws in new restraint equipment and
technologies. Which she seems to be doing but without much luck so far.
No, I don't know exactly what she's coated in but QuAT runs far too many
experiments to keep track of them all.
I assure you safety protocols are being followed. Those monitors you
see mounted on the walls and the sensor equipment built into the room will be
keeping the nursing staff appraised of any changes in her condition. So she's
hardly been abandoned. Besides she certainly looks happy with her current
situation.
Well yes, for a short term trial there would be someone in there keeping
an eye on her personally but the screen indicates this is the start of a month
long trial. So while they'll look in on her periodically so she doesn't lack
for human contact the Quat Staff do have other duties. The Teachers will have
classes to tutor and the Testers are all wrapped up in the big demonstration
in the Arena.
Let me check this terminal for experimental details ... Aha! Here we go.
They're testing the new Delta Latex based Surgical Wrap to determine non
Infirmary uses.
As you know or can imagine in surgery it is vital for bandages to seal
as tightly as possible both to prevent fluid loss and to hold everything in
place so it can heal. The current varieties all fit closely but this newly
developed type goes a step further by bonding seamlessly. Which is to say
that when a piece of the Delta Surgi-Wrap is overlayed by another they fuse
to one another with creating join lines. It looks like a single continuous
whole which is why Brande appears to be have been sprayed and coated with
Delta (or Beta) Latex when in fact she's been bandage wrapped by hand.
If you think she's coated now take a look at the initial experiment!

According to the notes after wrapping her they attached strips to the
floor and ceiling (which as you see merged together so that it looks like a
single continuous coating) then attached strips to the ceiling which dangled
down. They lifted Brande up and when her wrapped head and shoulders touched
those strips they joined. After which they ran strips from her feet to the
floor so she couldn't swing around wildly in a bid to escape or kick a guard
(which she is allowed to try as a truly violent patient would) and with that
done the experiment began in earnest.
According to the notes she didn't make much progress in escaping and even
if she had successfully dislodged herself from hanging from the ceiling she
would have landed on the wrapped floor and her Surgi-Wrap would've merged with
its coating and glued her to the floor. However there was evidently an
element of discomfort here which made its non surgical use less attractive for
the regular Wards. While the Surgi-Wrap "breathes" well so that overheating
isn't a problem struggling against it and trying to stretch it causes it
contract. Remember that it was originally designed to hold things immobile
rather than flex freely.
While it'll revert to its original size this doesn't happen immediately,
again for medical reasons it returns to its original size slowly. Naturally
Brande kept struggling to escape but there were frequent intervals when it got
too tight that she had to hold still for long periods wait for it to loosen up
again.
While this property would seem to discourage patients from fighting the
Wrap we have some very stubborn patients and we prefer to avoid inflicting
unnecessary discomfort (necessary discomfort in another matter entirely) and
possible permanent constriction damage on them. So from the first series of
experimental testing I suspect we won't be using Surgi-Wrap extensively in the
Wards. Though it could be useful for disciplinary purposes or as a coffin
alternative in the Punitive Ward. Not to mention for pranks which is more or
less inevitable around here.
Then again that file only referred to the initial experiments and the
prototype version of Surgi-Wrap. From the looks of Brande there have been
further developments since it was last updated. After all that's why we run
these experiments. To find and correct the problems before approving any new
technology for institutional use.
So the question is what modifications have been made and what are they
hoping to accomplish with this second round of experimentation.
Ah! A stroke of luck. Tesse, are you familiar with how the the Surgi-Wrap
experiments are proceeding?

I am very familiar with the experiments. I oversaw them and am currently
completing my report. This photo of QuAT Tester Erika Slate and QuAT Instructor
Anice Farm is going to be included in the final report.

Would you like to know why they're smiling?
If not I'm sure Dr. ARNie can offer alternatives

Indeed. Perhaps you'd rather move on to the Testing Arena?
Having seen our trustee perhaps you'd prefer to meet our professional
Testers who do this sort of thing for a living?
Or if you'd rather meet the Teachers then we need to go down this corridor.
Alternately if you haven't already met them would you like to visit the
Administrators who keep this department running?
However if you've seen everything in this Department then there are
plenty of other options for continuing your tour.
Perhaps you'd like to meet the Support Staff members Quality Assurance and
Training is responsible for tutouring in our latest innovations?
Or the Medical Staff who will be prescribing these techniques and
technologies?
If you prefer we can arrange an interview with a member of our involuntary
patient acquisition team.
Perhaps you'd like to meet our Physical Trainers and see the Gym
Or I could give you the scoop on our advances in humane capture technology
Alternately some visitors have been fascinated by the specifics of our patient
restraint and control equipment
Others have wanted to hear all about our use of robotics
Then there are those who were more interested in the human interest angle of
our friendly staff rivalries
If you insist we could take a look at our underground high security storage
7facility
Of course you can always return to the Open Wards
Finally there's one more option. The place most everyone wants to see.
Do you still want to see the Grimbor Ward?
If you really want you can return to the Lobby
Or we can end the tour
