The Expanded Internship Program
While initially intended for students it was suggested that the
Internship program could be a good first step for patients who had
completed their rehabilitation to ease back into outside world after
their necessarily long confinment. Case in point
Rogue & Kitty Pryde
This two became friends when they attended the same school and
have resumed hanging out together since they were reunited.
Yes, they're both former patients and I'll explain Rogue's attire
in a few moments but first a little background. Until recently Kitty
was residing in the Open Ward (incidentally while this Kitty Pryde was
always a voluntary patient she has an involuntarily committed
doppleganger who continues to reside in the isolation ward).
while Rogue was confined to the Quarantine Wing because of her rather
unique skin condition.
To make a long story short both have learned to control their
gifts and have no desire to return to their former vigilante lifestyle.
In fact both have become rather used to life in the Institute and
while they entered the Internship Program to make the transition back
to the outside world they're beginning to think about staying on.
Of course one of the things our staff have to learn is that there
are penalties for insubordination or doing your job poorly enough to
earn demerits. So of course our interns have too learn this too,
hopefully it'll teach them to minimize their errors after completing
the program. To make this clear to them in the event of an intern
making too many errors or committing severe insubordination Mrs. Sonsaku,
(or anyone with sufficent clearance) can trigger a Green uniform to
morph from its normal state (which you see Kitty wearing) into
restraint mode (which you see Rogue wearing) so that she will not be
able to cause anymore trouble until disciplinary measures deemed
appropriate for the offence have been assigned onto the intern.
Excuse me? Oh, well actually Rogue hasn't done anything wrong. I
just asked Mrs. Sonsaku to demonstrate the uniform's morphing capability
to you and Rogue drew the short straw.
Moving on from former patients in the Internship program we come
to our latest innovation, current patients in the Internship program.
It's far from as risky as it sounds, I'd like you to meet the two
members of our pilot program.
Shimei Ryomo & Hakufu Sonsaku
These two were committed for believing they are the reincarnation
of male warriors from Ancient China. To be more specific since a
belief in reincarnation isn't proof of insanity I should mention it was
the insistence on savagely re-fighting battles from their "first" lives
that led to their being committed. On one occasion Ms. Royomo nearly
killed Hakufu Sonsaku, wrecking several school classrooms in the
process. Her assault only ended after Hakufu suffered a psychotic
breakdown and began to act like a viking berserker, oblivious to pain
and unstoppable. Ms. Ryoma barely escaped with her life and shortly
after her release from hospital was assaulted in several senses of the
word after picking a fight with another girl named Housen Ryofu who
suffers a similar delusion and whose violent nature has earned her a
place on Gold Team's acquisition list. Clearly someone had to stop
this before fatalities resulted and that someone was our Internship
Director, Goei Sonsaku.
I should make it plain that Hakufu Sonsaku is the daughter of
Goei Sonsaku who is also the one who arranged for both Hakufu and Ryomo
to be committed to the Institute. She considered it the ultimate act
of tough love and made sure to keep an eye on them after they were
admitted to the Institute.
Under her watchful eye both have made remarkable progress and it
was at her recommendation that both Hakufu and Ryomo were enrolled in
the pilot program for offering internships to patients.
It's not as wild an idea as it sounds being an extension of our
Open Ward Trustee Program. Of course since while they're interning the
patients in the program are loose in the Institute certain precautions
have to be taken. Hence the modified Green uniforms you see them
wearing.
Admittedly their dexterity is limited by the "mittens" that cover
their hands but we do have some modified tools and equipment designed
to interface with the latex covering so they can grasp and use the
necessary tools. The half mask design ensures there's no issues about
if they'll try and bite anyone and considering there are patients in
here who have literally torn out people's throats with their teeth its
a valid concern. Of course neither of these two have done that and if
we thought they were likely to they'd never have been approved for the
program. Still, better safe than sorry.
The biggest difference between patient and non-patient interns is
that once the patient interns have finished their shift their uniforms
morph into the restraint mode you saw Rogue demonstrating after which
they're escorted back to their rooms to rest until their next assigment
or their next therapy session, whichever comes first.
Though they don't know it their uniforms are also serving as a
field test for the proposed Restrained Efficiency program for the
Institute. Though since that's still in the testing phase and we don't
yet know if it's even practical to enact I'd better leave that for now.
Sorry, I can't say any more about it. My lips are sealed ... as
yours will be if you don't cease this line of questioning.
Quite, let's leave it for now.
Well that's about it for this department so unless you'd like to
go back and interview the non-patient Interns it's time to move on.
Perhaps you'd care to meet the support staff our Interns are training
under?
As I mentioned earlier there are three major Departments, Patient &
Outreach Services, Computer & Technical Services and the Security Department.
Also you might want to meet the Couriers who are close to the
same age as our interns
At the moment no-one is interning as a Physical Therapist
Or under our medical staff
Because of their strict requirements currently nobody is interning with
our Involuntary Patient Acquisition Team
Perhaps you'd like a word with the Quality Assurance and Training Staff
whom Stella's interning with?
Changing the topic would you like to drop by the recreational lounge where we
hold our staff parties?. Our interns made their debut at the 2004 Halloween Party.
Or would you rather hear the scoop on our advances in humane capture technology
Alternately some visitors have been fascinated by the specifics of our patient
restraint and control equipment
Others have wanted to hear all about our use of robotics
Then there were those who were more interested in the human interest angle of
our friendly staff rivalries
If you insist we could take a look at our underground high security storage
facility
Of course you can always return to the Open Wards
Finally there's one more option. The place most everyone wants to see.
Do you still want to see the Grimbor Ward?
Or we can end the tour
