The Akagi Incident

Dr. Ritsuko Akagi & her assistant Maya Ibuki

It has to be said that our initial programmed release of the Black Rovers did not go as planned. Rather than a single Rover being released due to a programming glitch all the Rover Vats were stimulated to simultaneously release a Rover. While the volunteer was swiftly engulfed the Jenny assigned to bring her back after she was Beta Latex coated called in a quickly cut off message that a second Rover was bearing down on her. A systems check showed that all the Vats had activated at the same time. A Red Alert went into effect as it wasn't known if the mass Rover activation was a systems fault or triggered by an attack on the system. Under Standard Operating Procedure the power neutralisers concealed within the grounds were activated in case paranormal intruders were already inside the perimeter. Because of the power requirements the wide broadcast neutralisers don't run constantly so they're only activated during Red Alerts to hopefully power down intruders and make them easier targets. Unfortunately they have limited effectiveness and work much better against mutants than magic users. The Rover Vats were shut down in case they were compromised while the grounds were checked. However this was complicated by all the Rovers still bouncing around the grounds in a search for targets. To clear them up it was announced over the public address system that 14 volunteers were needed to become Rover victims. Several dozen employees immediately rushed into the grounds hoping the Rovers would reach them first. Beta Latex has become very popular with the staff, a popularity heightened by its limited availability. Not long afterwards the Jennies who had followed the would-be victims reported that no one was being taken so the Rover supply had been exhausted. The grounds were checked but with the Spyders reporting no contacts it began to appear that the release been a glitch. The Jennies began recovering Rover victims, except for the first two the majority hadn't got far beyond the exits before the Rovers swooped down on them. Yet a headcount showed that they had found only 13 victims but if there had been 3 Rovers left they would have struck. So why the deficiency? Despite this lack the alert was downgraded from Red and the grounds' power neutralisers switched into Standby Mode to recharge their batteries. When this happened the answer arrived. At the time of the incident Dr Frost had been showing Dr. Ritsuko Akagi and her assistant Maya Ibuki around the grounds. They were cyberneticists the Institute was eager to hire so Dr. Frost had been asked to give them the grand tour as part of our efforts to recruit them. While she had been well aware of the pending Rover release they were on the opposite side of the Institute near the perimeter. A good place to be if a single Rover was released on the other side of the grounds but not if every vat around the Perimeter released one. Dr. Frost, Dr. Akagi and Ms. Ibuki had been detected within 30 seconds and all three encased inside of a minute. With a Red Alert declared and the power neutralisers blanketing the area Dr. Frost had been unable to signal for help telepathically and since she had been told to take as long as necessary for her tour no one had missed her. Gold Team (which consisted of Bianca, Toniya, Suniya and Rie at the time) was dispatched to rush out and retrieve and release Doctor Frost and her guests immediately! Thanks to some reckless driving by Rie they reached them in record time and cut them free on the spot. Rie called in that the job was done, everyone seemed fine and the guests were not talking about lawsuits. They began driving back as the system was tested. This time there was a controlled release of eight Rovers from different vats in a 30 second period. However this time the mass release was intentional to check that the system would accept Rover sequence and number changes. Eight volunteers were waiting outside the front doors for the Rovers but only one arrived to encase a lucky Nurse Joy. There was confusion about the whereabouts of the others until it was realised that Gold Team plus Doctor Frost and her two guests equalled seven. A squad of Jennies was dispatched to retrace Rie's route and found that as expected Dr. Frost, Dr. Akagi and Ms. Ibuki had been re-encased as had all four Gold Team members. Forced to choose between crashing into a Rover and skidding out of control or stopping Rie had chosen to pull over and they had been swarmed by Rovers. The Jennies freed Dr. Frost and her guests but while they collected Gold Team they left them encased on the grounds their orders hadn't mentioned freeing them. In actuality these Jennies had a grudge against Gold Team and it was payback time. Returning to the Institute they dropped off their passengers then found an empty group room and tossed Gold Team in to squirm around for the rest of the day. Dr. Akagi didn't hold a grudge and thanked Dr. Frost for a unique tour and accepted our employment offer despite (or because of) the incident. Ms. Ibuki also signed up and both seem to be enjoying working for the Chainsman Institute.

There is more to tell about the Rovers
